Sports News Monday, August 25, 2003 Compiled by SDNP Head lines Bangladesh’s significant improvement Pakistan ride on Hameed’s tons AFP, KARACHI, The Independent Aug 24: A twin hundred by debutant Yasir Hameed inspired Pakistan to a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh on the fifth day of the first Test at Karachi's National Stadium. The 25-year-old from Peshawar Sunday became only the second batsman in Test cricket's 128-year history to hit two hundreds in his first Test, following West Indian Lawrence Rowe's 214 and 100 not out against New Zealand at Kingston in 1971-72. Hameed, who reached 170 in the first innings, batted imperiously to lead Pakistan's successful chase of a 217-run target and inflict yet another defeat on Bangladesh. With the win, Pakistan also celebrated international cricket's return to the country where foreign teams' refusal to play over security fears caused a 15-month cricket drought. After steering left-armer Mohammad Rafiq for two runs, Hameed became the fourth Pakistani to score a century in each innings of a Test match – the 53rd time the feat has been achieved in all Test cricket. But the promising one-down batsman missed an armer from Rafiq in the next over and was bowled for 105 after 229 minutes at the crease after consuming 161 balls with 15 boundaries, leaving Pakistan needing another 47 runs to carry the day. Inzamamul Haq, unbeaten on 35, and Yousuf Youhana, 15 not out, ran an over throw on the last ball before lunch for the winning run to leave Bangladesh, Test cricket's latest entrants, with their 21st defeat in 22 Tests since they gained Test status three years ago. The newcomers can however, look back at the match with some consolation having shown significant improvement in their standard of play. They fought hard to take the Test into the final day, only the third time they have lasted five days of a Test, and can boast of Habibul Bashar Sumon's batting of 71 and 108. Pakistan resumed at a commanding position of 112-1 Sunday and added another 32 runs before losing opener Moahmamad Hafeez to Rafiq for a stubborn 50. The Hameed-Hafeez stand yielded 134 for the second wicket, reasoning Pakistan's best second wicket stand of 87 between Taufeeq Umer and Younis Khan at Chittagong last year. Hameed continued to dominate the bowling, hitting his way into the nineties with some sweetly timed drives, reaching the three-figure mark after 223-minute batting with 14 boundaries. Rafiq was the pick of Bangladesh bowlers with two wickets. The second of the three Tests starts at northwestern border town of Peshawar from August 27. Final phase starts today SPORTS REPORTER, The Independent The much awaited final phase of the Nitol-Tata 3rd National Football League begins today at the Sher-e Bangla Mirpur National Stadium. The gap between the preliminary round and the championship leg is 16 days, which was caused by the dispute over the venue of the last ten matches. The opening match, between tournament's surprise pack Moulvibazar Wanderers and Chittagong Mohammedan Sporting Club, will kick off at 4.30 pm. Both the sides, first time qualifiers for the finals of the country's top football event, are looking forward to enter the semifinal from Group-A, also involving Dhaka giants Abahani Limited, champions of the first edition and last year's runners-ups. Wanderers captain Murad Hossain Milon, whose side trained at the City Club ground in Mirpur, will be buoyed by the return of Nigerian booters Lade Baba and Bode Baba. Both the foreigners were banned after two matches for illegal international transfer certificate but the arrival of original papers opened up their scope to play. "Their return will be inspiration for us and I hope they will prove their worth," said Milon, the in-form striker who led the side from front to finish ahead of defending champions Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club in the previous round. Dhaka Mohammedans are now placed in Group-B - the so-called group-of-death - with Muktijoddha Sangsad and Arambagh Krira Sangha. Chittagong Mohammedans will miss key midfielder Parvez, serving a one-match ban after being sent-off in the previous match, but former national forward Shahajuddin Tipu has recovered from injury. They have registered Nigerian footballer Salisu for the finals. The Chittagong outfit practised at the Dhaka University ground and skipper Shafiqul Islam Shafiq is not worried about their opponents superb display. "We are also here to fight for a semifinal berth and want to win today. This will be our best chance because we will play the next game against Abahani on their ground," the defender said. The organisers have taken tight security measures at the venue to public safety and there will be plenty of law enforcing agency men apart from dog squad and metal detectors at the gates. Tournament committee secretary Manzoor Hossain Malu, who arranged a managers' meeting Sunday night, informed that the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has reserved a separate gallery (VIP-A) for female spectators. There will be special security for them and we want to encourage them to watch football," Malu said. BFF's trainee female footballers and students who participated in the recently concluded metropolis school football tournament, will get free entry. The price of gallery tickets is Tk 10 for all matches including the final while VIP tickets will cost Tk 30 daily and Tk 50 for the final. Every day, 50 buses will leave the Bangabandhu National Stadium premises for the Mirpur Stadium. Only those who will have match tickets can board these buses which will start from 2 pm. For their return to the city, the fans will have to produce the remaining half of the tickets. M Saifur Rahman, Minister for Finance and Planning, will declare the final phase open at 4.05 pm at a simple ceremony.
