Southeast Bank declares 30pc cash, 10pc stock dividends

Southeast Bank Ltd has declared 30 per cent cash and 10 per cent stock dividends for its shareholders for the year 2001, says a press release. The declaration was made at the bank's 7th annual general meeting held on Monday at Sonargaon Hotel.

The directors' report and audited accounts of the bank for the year ended on December 31, 2001 was placed before the shareholders and was approved by them.

The shareholders thanked the Board of Directors and Management of the bank for declaration of the dividends on the divisible profits of the bank.

Yussuf A. Harun, chairman of the bank, said the bank achieved a deposit of Tk 1263.02 crore and a pre-tax profit of Tk 40.22 crore as on December 31, 2001 registering a growth of 22.51 per cent and 39.99 per cent respectively.

Harun also disclosed that the half-yearly position of the bank till June 30, 2002 was satisfactory and the bank made a pre-tax profit of Tk 22.25 crore during the period.

After the AGM, an extraordinary general meeting of shareholders was held to approve the issuance of one rights shares against every two shares held.

Syed Abu Naser Bukhtear Ahmed, managing director of the bank, also spoke on the occasion.

CSE, FDJCS hold workshop on capital market

CHITTAGONG, Aug 6 : A day-long workshop here yesterday urged the media to play an active role in motivating the people to invest in the capital market by focussing on trade trends and economic issues, reports BSS.

Speakers at the workshop viewed that the media could also remove confusion of small investors by giving an exact picture of the share market including measures for security of their investment and possibilities of return from it.

The workshop on "Reporting on Capital Market" was held at the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) conference hall under the joint auspices of the CSE and The Forum for Development Journalism and Communication Studies (FDJCS).

CSE Chief Executive Waliul Maruf Matin, Company Secretary Abu Bakar Siddiq, CSE Executives Shaper Sultana, Shafiqul Islam Talukder, Sonia Hossain, A.K.M. Sahroj Alam, FDJCS Director Dr Andru Alok Kumar Dewari, Prof Ali Azgar Chowdhury and Rouson Akhter Soma took part in the discussion on different aspects of the share market. FDJCS Executive Prof Shahidullah Lipon was the moderator.

A total of 30 participants including journalists working in different media and students of Chittagong University's Journalism Department participated in the workshop.

CSE Vice-President Habibullah Khan distributed certificates among the participants.
