The visiting former Indian Prime Minister I K Gujral called on the Leader of the Opposition and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina at her Sudha Sadan residence last night and discussed bilateral and regional issues of mutual concern.

 The Annual Development Programme (ADP) for the current fiscal (2002-03) has been downsized to Taka 17100 crore from its original size of Taka 19200 crore. The revised ADP was approved by the National Economic Council (NEC) yesterday in a meeting with Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in the chair.

 Bangladesh Bank has asked the commercial banks to reorganise their boards in line with new requirements to bring in professionally sound persons in the banks' policy making bodies to protect depositors' interests. The number of directors in a bank board will not exceed 13, but the banks having more than 13 directors in their boards can continue with them until their current tenure ends, the central bank said in a circular yesterday. The circular bars more than one from a same family from becoming directors of same board.

 Ten newly appointed additional judges of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court (SC) would take oath today amid boycott of the ceremony by the SC Bar Association and also a sit-in demonstration by its members.

 Launch owners yesterday called off their wildcat strike as the government revoked its earlier restriction on plying of launches between 3pm and 8pm. The decision was taken at a meeting between the leaders of the Launch Owners Association of Bangladesh and the Minister for Shipping, Akbar Hossain.

 Chairman of Jamuna Group Nurul Islam Babul was released from the Dhaka Central Jail yesterday after he was granted bail in all cases filed against him. The Detective Branch of police arrested Babul at his Gulshan residence in the early hours of Friday. The arrest of the industrialist came two days after he allegedly issued a death threat to the executive chairman of the Board of Investment.

 A group of unidentified miscreants looted two Chinese Rifles, a shot gun and 60 rounds of bullet from three patrol police of Uttara thana at Sector 8 Uttara model town in the city on Friday night.

 Outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party has claimed responsibility for looting rifles and 600 bullets from Storeroom of Daulatpur Jute Mill on Thursday night.  Meanwhile, there is no headway in the investigation of arms looting case in which 27 out of 80 people have been shown arrested yesterday.

Bangladesh and India have agreed in principle to undertake joint effort to produce quality and high-yielding variety of jute seeds in an attempt to restore the lost glory of the product.

 Ajai Raj Sharma, director general of the Border Security Force (BSF) will lead the Indian delegation at the biennial meeting with the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) beginning at Dhaka today. The delegation for the five-day meeting, which will include representatives of the home and external affairs ministries, is expected to raise the issue of illegal migration from Bangladesh and the 'presence' of insurgent training camps.

 Delegates from four South Asian countries including Bangladesh yesterday presented a gloomy picture of human rights situation in their respective countries and urged the people of the region to take a common stand for improving the situation.

On the other hand, former Indian prime minister of India and Chairman of South Asia Human Rights I K Gujral warned the people of the South Asia about the impact of an 'emerging neo-imperialism in word politics'.

 India's national airline, Air India, has cancelled five flights after a row with pilots over the pneumonia-like Sars virus. Air India pilots are refusing to fly with any crew member who has travelled to a Sars-affected country in the past 10 days.

 Three suspected militants and two Indian soldiers have died in a suicide attack on the offices of state-run television and radio in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-administered Kashmir.

Beijing has ordered the closure of cinemas, theatres, karaoke bars and internet cafes in an effort to stop the spread of the pneumonia-like Sars virus, China's official media has reported.

 U.S. troops will stay in Iraq (news - web sites) and Afghanistan (news - web sites) until stable, democratic governments have taken control, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Saturday.   

 Rumsfeld said he was traveling to the Persian Gulf and South Asia to thank forces "deeply involved in the successes we've achieved in Iraq and Afghanistan."

 The Pentagon is sending to Baghdad teams of Iraqi exiles with professional experience suited to rebuilding the government in postwar Iraq, defense officials said Saturday

 A U.S.-held weapons cache laden with 80 Iraqi missiles exploded Saturday on the teeming edge of Baghdad, killing six people and pummeling homes for miles around with a cascade of warheads, rockets and mortars.

A collapse in the final session on the third day left Bangladesh staring at defeat against South Africa in the first GrameenPhone Test yesterday. At stumps the hosts were 185-5 in their second innings after South Africa declared their first innings at 470-2 fifteen minutes before lunch at the MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong.
