The government has decided to shelve the move to sell gas to India during its tenure in view of high political risks. Two influential government policymakers said gas export would have left an immediate positive impact on the investment scenario, but the government took public opinion and opposition political parties' reactions into consideration.

State Minister for Energy AKM Mosharraf Hossain yesterday said the main opposition Awami League should not oppose any decision on pipeline export of gas because "all major groundwork in this regard were done when they were in the government."
The main opposition Awami League (AL) yesterday demanded cancellation of 45 parliamentary standing committees.  Opposition Chief Whip Abdus Shahid called on Speaker Jamiruddin Sircar yesterday at his office at the Sangsad Bhaban and lodged the protest.

About 12,000 workers and staff of three state-owned jute mills in Khulna were laid off for a period of 45 days with effect from today (August 9) under Sections 6 and 9 of the Employment of Labour Standing Order Act of 1965.

Different student organisations and the general students yesterday staged demonstrations on
Dhaka University campus demanding cancellation of Friday¹s preliminary test of 24th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) and removal of the Public Service Commission (PSC) Chairman Prof Zinnatunnesa Tahmida Begum for fresh question leak.

Criminals are ruling the roost in the 10 districts of the south-western region of the country. The law-abiding and peace-loving tax-payers of the region are virtually held hostage at the hands of the criminals, who seem to be hell-bent to undo the overall law and order in the region, according to an Independent report.

Reciting Urdu poetry, RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav, along with 33 other Parliamentarians, scribes and strategists, crossed over to Pakistan at the Wagah border on Saturday on peace mission.

Law-makers, experts and journalists from India and Pakistan will begin a two-day conferencee in
Islamabad on Sunday in a non-governmental effort to foster goodwill between the two countries. Parliamentarians from almost all major parties of the two countries will be participating in the conference on "Understanding .

Nine people, including an elderly Muslim and his son, were killed on Saturday and overnight in occupied Kashmir, where the residence of a state lawmaker was also attacked, police said.

International

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad pressed Saturday for democratic reforms in the United Nations(UN) so that the world would not always live in fear of war.  Mahathir, a moderate Muslim leader who opposed the US-led Iraq war, said the "risk of being invaded and occupied is real" because no one dared to criticise powerful countries.

Sports

Bangladesh national cricket team returned home on Saturday with a mixed experience during their one and a half month tour of Australia. Bangladesh were outplayed both in the Test and one-day international series by the world champions Australia.

Bangladesh Football Federation is yet to take any firm decision about the start of the final phase of the Nitol Tata National Football League. A meeting of league committee will take the decision in its meeting on August 11.  The meeting will first decide about the venue for the final round. BFF has already requested the National Sports Council to provide the Bangabandhu National Stadium for the purpose.
