People from
different strata yesterday paid tributes to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur
Rahman in observance of the Mourning Day marking the 28th anniversary of
his martyrdom.
The fourth day of the launch strike enforced by the private launch owners
passed off yesterday amid mounting sufferings to the passengers. The
regular rocket of BIWTC, some tugboats and four ferries were busy carrying
passengers to and from Sadarghat to ease sufferings of the
commuters.
The main opposition Awami League has given a call for countrywide
dawn-to-dusk hartal today (Saturday) in protest against what it said the
government’s dilly dallying in execution of High Court verdict in the
Bangabandhu Murder Case and cancellation of the state-level observation
of the National Mourning Day and public holiday on August 15 since the
alliance government assumed power in 2001.
The 25th founding anniversary of BNP or the silver jubilee of the party
will be observed through out the country on September 1. A Silver Jubilee
Observance Committee was formed yesterday with senior joint secretary
general of the party Tareq Rahman as its convener. The elaborate programme
of the Silver Jubilee will be finalised later.
Three persons were killed and three others were injured in a gas cylinder
blast at Gasbaria under Chandanaish Upazila, about 30 km South off Chittagong
city, Saturday morning. Police claimed it an old gas cylinder.
Considering the price volatility, countries like Bangladesh should
concentrate on gas preservation rather than exploration, said visiting
Nobel Laureate Prof Joseph Stiglitz while talking to a group of newsmen in
the city yesterday.
Bangladesh has enormous potentials to double the production of spices to
meet the annual domestic demand of 7.5 lakh mts. This was disclosed
yesterday when Agriculture Minister MK Anwar visited the Spices Research
Centre (SRC) set up by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) at
Shibganj upazila of Bogra.
Six policemen and a militant were injured as a fierce gunfight erupted
between the armed militants of Jama’atul Mujahidin, an extremist
organisation, and the police in village Uttar Naheshpur under Khetlal
upazila of Joypurhat in the early hours of Saturday.
A team of the Criminal Investigation Department, police, yesterday rescued
three women from Zia International Airport and arrested two alleged
traffickers.

clash over the demarcation of Muhuri Project area in Feni Friday.
The abducted millionaire businessman and BNP leader Alhaj Jamal Uddin
Ahamed Chowdhury is yet to be rescued after 22 days of his kidnapping. The
joint rescue operation by the police and the BDR continued in different
remote places of Fatikchhari and adjoining areas in vain.
About 2,000 terrorists have made more than one crore people of Chittagong
district hostage. Most of the terrorists possess illegal arms and
ammunitions. The law-enforcing agency could do nothing to bring the
terrorists to their knees, reports The Independent.

Five Russian soldiers were killed today in an explosion in Russia's
breakaway republic of Chechnya, military officials in the North Caucasus
region told the Interfax news agency.

The Bangladesh
cricket team will leave Dhaka tonight to play three Tests and five one-day
internationals in their first full series in Pakistan. The expectation is
high after the team's performance in Australia but coach Dav Whatmore's
target remains the same: To improve individually.
A Pakistani court Friday cleared the national cricket board to host next
week's Test match against Bangladesh in the southern port city of Karachi.
Ajax Sporting Club beat Sonali Bank 2-1 in the keenly contested match of
the Green Delta Premier Division Hockey League at Moulana Bhasani Hockey
Stadium on Friday.
