veteran politician and president of Khulna City Awami League Advocate
Manjurul Imam, 64, was shot dead by unidentified assailants near his house
on Shamsur Rahman Road in the city at about 10 in the morning yesterday.
The assailants also hurled a bomb on the rickshaw carrying the slain
leader and his junior lawyer Bijon Behari Mandal, 42, towards Khulna

The Awami League has announced a three-day action programme including a
12- hour hartal from 6 am across the country on Thursday (August 28)
protesting yesterday’s killing of party advisory council member and its
Khulna City unit president, valiant freedom fighter Advocate Manjurul
Imam.
Outraged by the latest killing of a leader of her party, opposition leader
Sheikh Hasina yesterday called for unseating the "anti-people, killer"
government through a united resistance.
The High court yesterday dismissed the petition of Zohra Tajuddin, AL
Presidium member and wife of slain former Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmed,
seeking withdrawal of the Nov 3, 1975 jail killing case from the Sessions
Court and prayer for trial of the case by the High Court. The trial will
now resume in the Sessions Court.
Speaker Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar yesterday administered oath of office
to Khadija Amin as a member of the Jatiya Sangsad. A gazette notification
issued yesterday declared the four-party alliance candidate, Khadija Amin,
elected in the by-election to the Netrokona-3 seat.

Maoists Monday
afternoon attempted to murder former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba in
Amkhoiya jungle near Dhangadhi, a radio report said. Deuba is now at an
army camp at Sukhad village.
Nepalese army killed round 10 Maoists in two-hour-long exchange of fire
between the army and the rebels at Shera river area of Nauthar VDC in
Lamjung Monday morning, security sources told Nepalnews.
Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has confirmed his visit to
Pakistan in January 2004 to attend the South Asian Association for
Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit in Islamabad. Indian High Commissioner
Shivshankar Menon said in a meeting with leaders of the ruling PML-Q that
Prime Minister Vajpayee would visit Pakistan early next year to attend the
SAARC moot.
Up to 50 Taliban fighters were killed in a big air and ground operation by
U.S. and Afghan forces against hundreds of guerrillas on Monday in the
province of Zabul, a spokesman for the governor told news agency.
A pair of car bombs ripped through lunchtime crowds in India's financial
capital, Bombay, on Monday, killing 46 people and wreaking havoc at a
crowded jewelry market and a popular historic landmark. More than 150
people were wounded. Police Commissioner Ranjit Sharma blamed India's
longtime rival, Pakistan, saying suspicion in the blast fell on Islamic
militant groups "let loose by the enemy country."

A statement
posted on the Internet in the name of Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network
has claimed responsibility for an attack on the U.N. headquarters in
Baghdad last week that killed 23 people, including the head of mission.
With the death yesterday of another U.S. soldier in Iraq , the number of
U.S. troops who have died there since May 1, when President Bush declared
an end to major combat operations, rose to 138 -- the same number as
perished during the six weeks of fighting that marked the fall of Baghdad
and its immediate aftermath, according to Pentagon records.
