The three-day long Biswa Ijtema, the second largest
congregation of the Muslims after the holy Hajj, concludes today with
offering Akheri Munjat. The President, Prime Minister and Leader of the
Opposition are expected to take part in the Akheri Munajat.
The government has selected initially nine mass
graves from a large number of such places across the country for
development and building monuments over those, Ministry of Liberation
War Affairs sources said Saturday.
Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia returned home
last night finishing her three-day state visit to Bangkok.
Opposition Leader Sheikh Hasina appealed to
international forums, including the Commonwealth, for looking into why
the government here 'obstructs' the opposition from speaking in
parliament or carrying out political activities on the street.
The single-member judicial inquiry commission of
Justice Sultan Hossain Khan began his work yesterday to probe the serial
blast incidents in four movie houses of Mymensingh town. Justice Khan
first visited Aloka Cinema Hall and then the three other halls-Chhayabani,
Ajanta and Purabi where the powerful bombs went off on December 7
killing at least 18 people.
The Martyred Intellectuals Day was observed
Saturday in commemoration of the martyrdom of the members of the
intelligentsia who were assassinated at the fag end of Bangladesh
liberation war.
Barun Bhowmik Nayan, a reporter of the Daily Al
Amin, was held by the joint team of anti-terrorist operation from his
Savar residence in the early hours Saturday. Confirming the arrest the
police said that Barun was involved in spying, hundi trade and
patronisation of terrorist groups.
The government will formulate new laws to evict
all the illegal encroachers who have kept riverbank lands in the country
occupied for years together.
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister
Moudud Ahmed said the government has been working to form an independent
human rights commission with a view to ensuring human rights in its true
sense for all.
The joint forces have arrested Selim Osman, former
president of Narayanganj Chamber and elder brother of Awami League
leader Shamim Osman, from his garments factory Saturday. A pistol was
recovered from the factory.
High Court issued Saturday rule upon the
government to show cause in 7 days as to why the detention of Saber
Hossain Chowdhury, an Awami League leader, and Shuvra Dev, an artiste,
should not be declared illegal, it is reported.
The High Court stayed Saturday screening of the
film 'Hason Raja' scheduled to be released to movies across the country
on December 27. The order came upon a writ petition filed by Sadia
Chowdhury Porag, daughter of late national professor Dewan Mohammad
Azraf and a descendant of Hason Raja.
Editors of national dailies, news agencies and
electronic media observed Saturday that an international news agency has
miserably failed to perform its professional duties in reporting
Mymensingh bomb blasts.
The election of Narayanganj Pourasava will be held
on January 16, an election commission press release said yesterday.
According to the schedule announced by the election commission, the date
for submission of nomination papers is December 23, scrutiny of
nomination papers is December 24 and the last date for withdrawal of
candidature is December 31.
Police arrested 15 workers of the Awami League
from its central party office at the Bangabandhu Avenue in the city
yesterday evening. Witnesses said police cordoned off the Awami League
office soon after AL chief Sheikh Hasina left the party office at about
5:15 pm. She was presiding over a discussion meeting to mark the
Martyred Intellectuals day.

At least 40 Afghan children died due to cold in refugee
camps in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border areas.
Pakistani authorities Saturday freed the head of
Jaish-e-Mohammad, one of the most militant movements fighting Indian
rule in Kashmir which New Delhi has accused of carrying out a string of
deadly attacks.
Police early yesterday gunned down two suspected
armed Pakistani militants at a roadblock on the outskirts of the Indian
capital, while a third escaped. The two rebels were killed in a shootout
with Delhi police in the Tughlakabad area, near the homes of some
officers of the Indian Air Force and the paramilitary Border Security
Force.
A suspected gangster wanted by Indian police for a
series of deadly bomb blasts in 1993 and arrested in Dubai has been
deported to Pakistan, a newspaper reported Saturday. The Khaleej Times
quoted Emirati security sources as saying that Anees Ibrahim, younger
brother of Indian Muslim underworld boss Dawood Ibrahim, had been sent
back to Pakistan.
· Muslims in India's riot-scarred western Gujarat
state were Saturday gearing to move to safer areas, fearing fresh
violence once results of assembly elections were declared. Results of
Thursday's vote, in which 61.7 percent of 33 million registered voters
cast ballots, were to be announced Sunday.
US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian
Affairs Christina Rocca has assured US government's continued support to
strengthen democracy in Nepal and its fight against Maoist insurgency.
Rocca, who arrived on Friday on a three-day visit, had talks with King
Gyanendra, Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand, Foreign Minister
Narendra Bikram Shan and Chief of Army Staff Pyargjung Thapa.

USA in Seoul and others cities in South Korea yesterday protesting
incident of killing two Korean children by American solders.
The United Nations pressed Iraq for a list of
scientists linked to arms programs declared by Baghdad in a dossier that
US officials say is deeply flawed. Un experts, testing Iraq's assertion

Defending champion Dhaka cruised to a five-wicket win
over Barisal in their opening limited-over match of the Ispahani Tea 4th
National League at the BKSP ground in Savar yesterday. Set to score 191,
Dhaka rattled up 192 for 5 in 40.1 over with opener Rashedul Huq scoring
a 55 off 51 balls.
Both the Bangladesh and West Indies cricket teams
arrived in the port city yesterday to play in the second and final Test
of the Coca-Cola Series, which begins tomorrow at the MA Aziz Stadium.
After landing at the Shah Amanat International Airport in the morning,
Khaled Mashud's men went to the Hotel Agrabad. In the afternoon, it was
the turn of the 15-member West Indies squad led by Ridley Jacobs, to fly
in from the capital.
Bangladesh take on Kuwait in their opening match
of the Under-15 Asia Cup today at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. They will
