Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia lauded
the role of Bangladesh Defence Services Command and Staff College in
improving professional standard and expertise of military officers. "This
unique institution for imparting integrated training to the three services
of armed forces has built up a firm bond among inter-services officers,"
she told a function marking DSCSC silver jubilee at Mirpur Cantonment
Monday evening.
The cabinet yesterday decided on speedy recruitment of freshers to fill up
25 per cent of vacant posts in health and education cadres by-passing the
Public Service Commission (PSC). The new recruits will be appointed on a
five-year contract. The ministries and departments concerned will arrange
a 500-mark 'special examination' to fill- up the 25 per cent vacant posts,
it is reported.
The degree (pass) and subsidiary examinations under the National
University begin today countrywide amid tight security. Some 340,000
examinees sit for their exams at 611 centres under six divisions over the
next two months.
The Bangladesh Army will put on a new look with the commissioning of 20
women cadets after today's passing-out ceremony at the Bangladesh Military
Academy (BMA).
Tenure of executive bodies of the three Hill District Councils (HDCs), the
highest local bodies of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), will expire
today unless there is further extension.
Security has been beefed up countrywide to avert any untoward incident in

The High Court yesterday declared the detention order of Awami League
leader AFM Bahauddin Nasim illegal and asked the government to release him

sides.

A businessman was beaten to death by his younger brothers Monday at city's
Kamrangirchar area. In another incident the police recovered the
decomposed body of a houswife who was allegedly killed by her husband on
December 12 at Shyampur area in the city.
The election to the Dhaka University Teachers Association (DUTA) will be
held today (Tuesday). The polling will start at 10 am and continue till
2.00 pm at the Teachers Club of the university without any break.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has reduced
the tariff of different segments of the internet service providers (ISPs).
The move is aimed at allowing more access to Internet and foster the
growth of the information communication technology (ICT).

Pakistan's conservative North West
Frontier Province (NWFP) has banned 'unethical' New Year celebrations and
vowed to crack down on un-Islamic behaviour during the holiday.
Pakistan's new Prime Minister, Zafarullah Jamali, won a confidence vote
Monday in the National Assembly, a result viewed as the first test of his
ability to run the first civilian government in three years.
Women in the violence-torn southern district of Indian Kashmir are
stocking up on burqas after shadowy threats in the name of an Islamic
group demanding they cover up. The scare in Rajouri district, about 170 km
west of the winter capital Jammu, has intensified after three teenage
girls were killed December 19, two of them beheaded.
Indian security forces Monday accused a frontline tribal separatist group
of jeopardising peace talks by violating a cease-fire in the northeastern
state of Nagaland.
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf revealed Monday he warned Indian
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee earlier this year that Pakistan could
step beyond conventional warfare if it had to defend its territory.
Musharraf, addressing an army corps reunion, did not mention the threat of
nuclear weapons, but said he was prepared to take severe measures at the
height of crisis between the nuclear-armed archrivals.

A senior Saudi official denied reports
of a secret promise by Riyadh to make its airspace and bases available for
use by the United States in the event of war against Iraq, in remarks
published Monday. "This report is untrue. The kingdom's position on this
issue has been very clear from the start," Deputy Defence Minister Prince
Abdulrahman bin Abdul Aziz told a daily.
Iraq wants effective support and concrete action from Arab and Muslim
nations to help resist US threats to invade, a leading newspaper said
Monday. "What Iraq asks (of Arab and Muslim countries) is concrete action
and an effective stance and not calls" to solve the crisis, said Babel, a
tabloid run by President Saddam Hussein's elder son Uday.
In front of one million people, opposition leader Mwai Kibaki was sworn
yesterday as Kenya's president and vowed not to unleash a witch-hunt on
his political enemies as the east African country heralded the dawn of a
new era.
A Yemeni shot dead three American
doctors and wounded a fourth US national at a missionary hospital in the
south of the country, a Yemeni official said Monday. Sources at the US
embassy in Sanaa confirmed the victims were US citizens and said they were
working at the Jibla Baptist Hospital in Ebb province, some 170 km (105
miles) south of the capital.

Australia's Prime Minister John Howard
has joined Tony Blair's call for a cricket World Cup boycott of Zimbabwe
as the row over its co-hosting of the event intensified. Zimbabwe chief
government spokesman Jonathan Moyo responded by saying Britain and
Australia wanted to keep 'cricket white' by pulling out of matches there.

Lie Aung broke the deadlock scoring three minutes after the break for the
winners while Aung Ila King doubled the lead in the 54th

Locals Murad Hssai, Akhter Hossain and Shahnewaz Ahmed got off to a good
start in the BKSP (Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan) International
Junior Tennis Championships qualifying round winning their respective
second round matches at BKSP in Savar yesterday.
Four players jointly finished top after the completion of the third round
matches of the Prime Bank 5th International Rating Chess
tournament yesterday. Grand Master Ziaur Rahman, Saifuddin Lavlu, Arman
Monir and International Women Master Rani Hamid earned full three points
to lead the table jointly.
