Awami League president Sheikh Hasina yesterday expressed her party’s solidarity with the nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Action Council of jute-cotton-textile mills workers and employees on September 16.

The port city of Chittagong and its adjoining areas, particularly the hill districts Bandarban, Khagrachhari and tourist city Cox’s Bazar are being used by the underworld notorious criminals as the major transit point of illegal arms trade and smuggling, reports The Independent.

Normal life was disrupted and business activity suffered, as the day--long hartal called by Khulna chapter of Awami League protesting Saturday's killing AL leader Quamrul Islam Kutu was observed in the metropolitan area and other places of the district yesterday. No untoward incident was reported from any part of the district including the city during the hartal period.

Pakistan yesterday  expressed "deep concern" over India's proposed arms purchase from Israel and feared India's massive arms purchase were not aimed at Pakistan alone. Foreign Office Spokesman Masood Khan told reporters at the weekly briefing,"We don't know what they intend to do? They can't use all of these against Pakistan alone," he added.

Ariel Sharon, the first Israeli Prime Minister to set foot on Indian soil, arrived New Delhi  Monday night. The trip is expected to cement strategic alliance between New Delhi and Tel Aviv.

Welcoming the Indo-Israeli friendship, United States has expressed its willingness to work constructively with both the sides if its support or approval was needed. Terming Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's visit to India as a "bilateral matter", US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said "we are always glad when our friends make friends
with each other and work together

As many as 100 Maoist rebels could have been killed in a huge battle with security forces in western Nepal, army sources said Monday

Courting arrests of over 500 leaders and workers, the five political parties in Nepal  continued the anti-prohibitory and anti-King protests for the fifth consecutive day on Monday.

Iran's leading clergy assembly called yesterday on the Iraqi people to expel the coalition forces which it branded "armed robbers", the news agency IRNA reported. The Iraqi people should maintain their unity, administer the affairs of their country themselves and expel the "armed robbers" from their homeland in order to safeguard Islamic values, Ayatollah Ali Meshkini, the head of the Experts' Assembly, said at the biannual meeting in Tehran.

Republicans and Democrats in the United States predicted Monday that Congress will approve the $87 billion President Bush wants for Iraq and Afghanistan, but many said they would demand more details on administration policy in both countries.

Britain said Monday it was sending around 1,200 extra troops to Iraq to tackle escalating violence and promised to deploy around the same number later to help restore the country's crippled infrastructure. The deployment, which will boost Britain's military presence in southern Iraq to 12,000, were urgently needed to avoid a security collapse in post-war Iraq, Reuters reports.

Bangladesh are hoping for their first one-day win in four years when they take on Pakistan in the first of five one-day matches in the ancient city of Multan in central Pakistan on Tuesday.

England completed a remarkable comeback to beat South Africa by nine wickets on the fifth day of the fifth and final Test at The Oval here Monday to square the series 2-2.

Bangladesh Hockey Federation (BHF) announced a 20-member national squad and the name of the six officials for the coming sixth Asia Cup Hockey tournament to be held in Kuala Lumpur from September 21.

The Green Delta second division hockey league will start from October 5 at Maulana Bhashani Hockey Stadium. A total of 14 teams, split into two groups, will take part in the first phase of the league with three top teams of each group qualifying for the super league.
