Prime
Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday sought cooperation of the tribal chiefs and
locals in maintaining peace in the CHT, which is an imperative for doing
massive development works undertaken in the region.
As the Rajas
and a representative met with the Prime Minister at her office in Dhaka in
the afternoon, they assured her of extending "all-out cooperation" in
order to give peace and development a chance in the Chittagong Hill
Tracts.
The CHT once again gripped with tensions in the wake of series of clashes
between hill people and Bangla-speaking settlers from the floodplains. The
killings, extortion and abductions further strengthened the ongoing
fratricidal, reports Bangladesh Observer.
The four-day programme of BNP silver jubilee celebrations begins today
with the inauguration of a photograph and poster exhibition at the
National Museum at 5 pm today. BNP Secretary General and LGRD and

The proposed
bus service between Dhaka and Agartala in Tripura state of India will

A group of independent archaelogists and historians is to challenge a
report by the archaeological survey of India that a Hindu temple existed
at the holy city of Ayodhya beneath the ruins of a mosque destroyed in
1992. At a news conference in New Delhi, the group said it would file its
objections in court. "It is all a figment of the imagination," said
historian Irfan Habib, who claimed that the government
archaeologists had "monkeyed" with the structure they excavated to
establish that they had uncovered a Hindu shrine. The United Nations
refugee body UNHCR and World Food Program (WFP) have warned Nepal and
Bhutan governments of slashing foreign aid should they fail to include the
UNHCR as the mediator in the refugee crisis, a report said Sunday.
Nepalese government has decided to provide special security to
ex-ministers and political leaders and further boost up security for
ex-Prime Ministers. This decision came in the wake of frequent Maoist
attacks in recent days.
