Head lines National Film Awards Tanvir Mokammel hogs the limelight CULTURAL REPORTER, The Independent National Film Awards ceremony for the years 1999, 2000, 2001 was held on 10 September 2003 at the Osmani Autodorium. Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia was the chief guest in the programme and gave away the prizes. It was a colourful programme attended by the celebrities of different fields including a host of ministers and secretaries. The programme started with the recitation from the Holy Quran by Kaari Mohammad Obaidullah at around 4.30 PM as per the schedule. After the speech of Nazmul Alam Siddique, Secretary of the Information Ministry, the award giving session started. For last few years the process of national film award giving was stopped. As a result arrangement for awards of three years together was made. The selection of the award winners was done based on result of close scrutiny of forty films by a Jury Board. After the award giving session, Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia gave her speech. She said, " our films are related to our lives. Films are not only a source of momentary pleasure. It documents our life style, ethos and story of success and failure. Films have a universal language and films made in Bengali Language too can create universal appeal. We have no shortage of talented makers to make films that can earn international acclaim. Some of our films at different times have attracted international attention and have earned accolades. I congratulate the makers, producers, artistes and others involved." She also said, " Over last few years, our film industry saw a degenerating phase. Obscenity and vulgarity engulfed most of our films. Even the titles of the films attested to the decadence prevalent in the film industry. Now time has come to prevent the indulgence of the vulgar practice and make our film industry more viable and profitable. We have seen that the elements in the films that does not relate our own identity, culture is not accepted by our viewers." Information Minister Tariqul Islam said, " Film is a very powerful medium. Today we have to find out why our people have stopped going to the theatres." Mofazzal Karim, the chairman of the Jury Board impressed the audience by his eloquent and important speech. He said, " While viewing forty films, I felt as if I was going through the punishment of the grave. It was hard to sort out quality in most of the films. I have heard that the Jury Board gave importance to the alternative films. But our evaluation of any film whether mainstream or alternative stream was not unjustifiable. We have valued those films that reflected the values, life style, taste that are close to our nation and people. We have to remember that nation and patriotism are above everything."
