Sports News Saturday, September 13, 2003 Compiled by SDNP Head lines Bangladesh throw away early initiative AFP, FAISALABAD (PAKISTAN), The Independent Sept 12: Stylish batsman Yousuf Youhana hit his ninth one-day century to steer Pakistan to a comfortable 74-run win over Bangladesh in their second one-day international at Faisalabad in eastern Pakistan. Youhana fought hard during his 106 runs to guide the home side to a safe total of 243-8 in the allotted 50 overs and then wrapped up the tourists' innings for 169 in 42.1 overs on Friday. Only Razin Saleh offered any resistance with 64. The 29-year-old Youhana compensated for other batsmen's failures after Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat before a packed Iqbal stadium of 20,000 spectators. His innings enthralled fans who came to see the first match at the venue since the 1996 World Cup quarterfinal between eventual champions Sri Lanka and England. Youhana was eighth man out in the final over after batting for 124 balls and hitting seven boundaries and a six. Bangladesh, now winless in their last 41 limited over matches, bowled tightly and never allowed Pakistani batsman the kind of liberty they did when Pakistan raced away to 323-3 in the first match at Multan on Tuesday to win by 137 runs. Youhana, playing his 141st match, was involved in two solid stands, one of 87 with skipper Inzamam-ul Haq who made 41 and one of 53 with wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal who made 26. Bangladesh's medium pacer Mushfiqur Rahman dismissed both openers -- Yasir Hameed for 15 and Hafeez for 26 -- in the 11th over as Pakistan found runs hard to come by. Youhana and Inzamam took the score to 133 but when Inzmam tried to hit a ball out of the ground he was bowled by left arm spinner Mohammad Rafiq, who finished with 2-45. Inzamam hit five boundaries in his 46-ball innings of 41. Bowler Razin Saleh then struck twice, claiming Younis Khan for his first one-day wicket and then having Shoaib Malik smartly taken at square leg, finishing with 3-48. Rafiq then forced an edge off Abdul Razzaq to Pilot for 4. In a shaky start to their innings, Bangladesh lost opener Mohammad Ashraful in the first over but Habibul Bashar Sumon and Razin Saleh added 82 for the second wicket to give the tourists some semblance of hope. But medium pacer Abdul Razzaq then derailed their progress by claiming the wickets of Sumon for 25 and Tushar Imran for one in successive overs. Saleh was caught off a Shoaib Malik delivery for a well played 64 off 93 balls. He hit eight boundaries. Alok Kapali chipped in with 37 but failed to find any support as Pakistani bowlers wrapped up the late order batting. Off-spinner Malik finished with 3-34 while Junaid Zia chipped in with three late wickets to take 3-21. The third match -- a day-night fixture, will be played in Lahore on September 15.
