Sports News Sunday, September 14, 2003 Compiled by SDNP Head lines Abahani to seek legal help SPORTS REPORTER, The Independent The pre-transfers drama of the coming football season continued as Abahani Limited decided to seek legal help in the Aminul issue. A meeting of Abahani high officials on Saturday decided to go to the court on the issue that has 'tarnished the image' of the popular club. Conveying the message of the high authority, Abahani director and football secretary Ashrafuddin Ahmed Chunnu informed this at a press conference at the club tent Saturday afternoon. Abahani officials Dewan Shafiul Arefin Chunnu, Monem Munna, Amlesh Sen, Satyajit Das Rupu and Jahangir Alam were also present. "It is sad that the situation has come this far for a national footballer like Aminul," Chunnu said. Aminul Haq, the number one national goalkeeper who plays for Muktijoddha Sangsad, was allegedly kidnapped by Abahani gunmen and following this, Muktijoddha football manager Abdus Sattar led a police raid at Abahani club and the law enforcers ransacked rooms and furniture. Aminul, who was available on the next day, complained that gunmen belonging to Abahani kidnapped him and forced him to sign for the club for the coming season. He managed to 'escape' from imprisonment to join his club. A case was filed by Aminul's brother Mainul about the kidnapping. "The whole incident has put blame on Abahani who have never polluted the sports arena. The raid and this baseless complaints have damaged our goodwill and reputation. So we have decided to go to the court," Chunnu said. "We will sit with a lawyer tonight to discuss the situation and see how to deal it. Aminul received a cheque of Tk nine lakh from us last month. So there is no question of kidnapping him or holding him under pressure. The entire drama was made up by his family," Chunnu said replying to a question. "Aminul's brother Mainul was present here when he signed the contract on August 14. We issued the cheque (IFIC Bank, Science Laboratory branch) on the previous day," informed Chunnu showing the photocopy of the cheque and other documents. "It proves that we did not force him. We have also heard that Aminul has accused that Rupu and me were involved during his kidnapping. But why did not he say it earlier? Now it has gone too far and we will also fight this to save the reputation of the club," Chunnu added. "We had a similar problem with Aminul in 2000 and we never wanted to take him back. Only after he gave us his consent, we decided to rope him in. The transfer has always hogged headlines. Players come and go. We lost four key players to Brothers Union this year but we have no grudge against them. This is the ways things roll. "On that day Aminul and I attended a prize distribution ceremony and came to the Abahani club. After having lunch with other players, he left once again giving his assurance. Suddenly things changed that same day and our club was raided," Chunnu said. Abahani's chief coordinator Tutul is worried about football's future and mentioned that if clubs start to flex muscles and misuse power, football will be destroyed. "Things have had happened before centring transfers but matters never went to court or take help of police to attack a club. This standard must not be set, otherwise everyone will do this in future," said Tutul reminding that Aminul may not be alone responsible for the whole thing and his club might have had something to do with it. Abahani manager and former national captain Monem Munna also sounded worried. "We decided to built a strong team this season because we felt that big players for big clubs will bring more fans to the ground. We have seen in the recent years that people has turned their face from football. For the sake of the game in the country, we convinced our donors that we need this," he said. "Aminul was a vital part of that plan and I had five to seven meetings with him and other Muktijoddha players. The others told me that as they had taken money from Muktijoddha, they will not be able to join us. Aminul was confused about the transfers but never said that he has taken any money from Muktijoddha. Even when we asked him about his taking payment from the club (late July), Aminul informed that it was the last season's payment. He even said that he regrets what happened between him and Abahani in 2000 and wanted to compensate by playing for us," Munna told. Coach Amlesh Sen, who joined Abahani in 1972 when the club first played in first division, also mentioned that Aminul said yes to his offer to play for Abahani during the recently concluded National League in Sylhet. Criticising Muktijoddha official and Bangladesh Football Federation treasurer Shah Alam Chowdhury's recent remarks that Abahani have been involved in 'player hijacking' since 1972, Amlesh said, "If we were hijacked, why did we stay here after 1975 when the political situation changed? We could have left but we all stayed together because we loved this team. Arambagh booter kidnapped! SPORTS REPORTER, The Independent National goalkeeper Aminul Haq, who escaped from imprisonment after allegedly being kidnapped by Abahani Limited, was produced on Saturday before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court for hearing. Chief Magistrate Sujayet Ullah ordered Aminul to remain in Muktijoddha Sangsad's custody till September 20, the day the four-day football transfers of the season begins. Aminul's so-called kidnapping has sent the football arena into doldrums as the Abahani club was raided by police in the middle of the night. Abahani denied the allegations and claimed that they had given Aminul a cheque of Tk nine lakh last month as the signing money. Club officials also said that they had Aminul's consent about the deal and the man who has filed a case against Abahani, Aminul's brother Mainul Haq, was himself present when Aminul signed a contract. Abahani demanded justice from Bangladesh Football Federation and State Minister for Youth and Sports about the attack on the club and the allegations that have damaged the club's image. When contacted BFF general secretary Anwarul Haq Helal told that he has yet to receive Abahani's letter. "I'll have to see the papers before making a comment as a BFF official. But personally, I think that Aminul is responsible for the whole incident. It is not acceptable at all," Helal commented. "To take a decision this year, I'll have to go through more documents and the decision will have to come from the executive committee," he added. "But I am going to propose a plan for the next year that will save everybody from such hassles. There will be prescribed forms which will bear signatures of players and club authority to determine a player's consent. "A player who will commit to any club, will have to sign that form and if it is found out that one player has signed more than one such forms, we will find him guilty and punish him. The player could be banned for years," Helal added. Abahani officials have also demanded that players taking money from two teams be banned this year. Meanwhile, there were more allegations against Abahani about player snatching. This time, Arambagh Krira Sangha made allegations that Abahani abducted their defender Shawkat Khan, son of Tazul Islam of Chittagong. A press release issued by the club on Saturday mentioned that Abahani have Shawkat in their custody. Arambagh claimed that they made an agreement with Shawkat and made a payment of Tk three lakh to Shawkat for the coming season. It also added that despite repeated calls to return him, Abahani officials paid no response to give him back. |
