Aminul drama not yet over

Sports Reporter, The Independent

National number one goalkeeper Aminul Haq who is now the talk of the sports arena following his kidnapping drama that pitted club against club well before this season's footballers transfers, is contemplating to take exit from domestic football, his family has claimed.

There was no trace of the Muktijoddha Sangsad goaltender but Aminul has sent a letter to the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) on Tuesday.

BFF president SA Sultan, MP, informed that he has yet to read the letter but its substance may have something in value for tomorrow's executive meeting of the country's football authority.

"I have not gone through Aminul's letter, so I don't know what he has to say. We have an executive committee meeting tomorrow. We shall discuss the matter in the meeting with the findings of the investigation report," Sultan said on Tuesday while talking to newsmen at the BFF office.

"If Aminul is found guilty, the BFF will take necessary action. But we shall also discuss the subject matters of his letter," the BFF chief further said.

The BFF has formed a one-man probe committee involving Lt Col (retd) Obaidulllah Khan to investigate Aminul's alleged kidnapping by Abahani Limited and a police raid accompanied by Muktijoddha club official on the Abahani club. He is due to submit his report before the BFF meeting.

According to a source, the BFF will try to make a satisfactory solution of the crisis. The federation would also be careful not to create further controversy with their decision which may bring a negative result in football, the source added.

It is presumed that Aminul has sent a message to the BFF about his wish to not take part in the Premier League to avoid all controversy.

Aminul's whereabouts are not known but it is expected that he is in the custody of Muktijoddha Sangsad.

A court of law ordered earlier this week that Aminul stay in custody of Muktijoddha until September 20, the scheduled start of the four-day transfers, after he had been produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate for testifying.

It seemed after an unofficial meeting between Abahani and Muktijoddha officials that both clubs have cooled down. But a new drama might make a beginning is the claim of Aminul's family is correct.Aminul's brother Mainul Haq filed a case holding Abahani responsible for Aminul's kidnapping but the whole family is now in trouble.

It was reported that the family has claimed that Aminul will not play in the Premier League and leave the country to earn his living. It was also reported that he will return the money he had taken from Muktijoddha and a cheque received from Abahani.

Dav's final warning

REUTERS, Rawalpindi, The Independent

Sept 16: Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore has warned some of his players to toughen up or lose their places on the team.

"If I do find one or two players who are not prepared to toughen up for international matches then they won't have a very long career at all," Whatmore said following Bangladesh's defeat in the third one-day international in Lahore on Monday.

Whatmore is still searching for his first win in Tests or one-day internationals since taking over Bangladesh last June.

Bangladesh lost the three-Test series in Pakistan 3-0 and are 3-0 down in the five-match one-day series with two to play.

Bangladesh, who won Test status in 2000, have yet to win a Test and have gone without a win in one-dayers since they beat Pakistan during the 1999 World Cup in England.

With two matches to play on their tour of Pakistan, Whatmore said he was looking for improvement.

"I had some hopes in this one-day series at the start of it. But I have revised my goals and objectives after the first game. But generally we are moving in the right direction," he said. Bangladesh had to chase a revised target of 244 in 44 overs after 55 minutes were lost because floodlights failed during the third one-dayer on Monday.

"It is not easy having six overs cut and having to chase a revised target of six runs per over from five. If we had been chasing the same score...then it might have been easier and a more competitive match," captain Khaled Mahmud Sujan said.

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram had encouraging words for Bangladesh, however, saying the side's improvement showed in their fielding and attitude.

"They will get there in two or three years' time. You have to give them time. Sri Lanka won the World Cup 16 years after getting Test status.
