Footballers transfer begins today amid tight security

SPORTS REPORTER, The Independent

A festivity mood was prevailing in the Abahani Limited and Brothers Union tents, while Mohammedan Sporting Club and Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra were maintaining a low profile just ahead of the much talk about inter-club footballers' transfer for the upcoming season.

The four-day footballers' transfer trade begins today sans any surprise as more or less all the clubs have already completed their business by taking their new recruits in 'safe custody'. But to make it official they will have to participate in the transfer process. For the first three day the show will start at 5.30 pm an close at 8.30 pm. The closing days' trade will be extended for an hour and ends at 9.30 pm.

Meanwhile, the Metropolis Football League Committee (MFLC) has taken all possible steps to hold the transfer in a smooth manner. The MFLC has recruited two platoon police at the MFLC office at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in a bid to avert any untoward incident. The MFLC will also keep officials ready to respond to clubs' calls for signing players on commission.

The transfer saga has already hit the country's sports arena with the 'controversial move' of goalkeeper Aminul Haq from Muktijoddha to Abahani. Aminul has already expressed his unwillingness to play in the premier league this season after the 'shocking drama'. However, the case was now lying with the BFF and it would give a final verdict on the issue after going through the report of a one-man inquiry committee.

Brothers Union, who made their debut in the first division league in 1975 with a stunning 1-0 win over Abahani, looked all set to sign a number of national stars in their line-up for the 2003-04 season. The Gopibagh based club with the blessing of their well-wisher, Dhaka City Mayor Sadeq Hossain Khoka, probably are going to form the best possible team in their history.

Different sources claimed that Brothers are spending more than Taka two crore to hook up big 'fishes' from Muktijoddha, Abahani and Mohammedans.

Goalkeeper Biplab, stoppers Rajani and Sujan, midfielder Arman Miah and striker Alfaz have confirmed their joining in Brothers from Muktijoddha, Stopper Nazrul, midfielders Iqbal, Pervez Babu and Liton are the four Abahani booters to don the orange colours. They also picked up defender Titu and midfielder Monwar from Mohammedans.

Brothers manager Amir Khan said he has taken up the job as a challenge and the club authority have already finalised a deal with a Yugoslavian coach who is expected in Dhaka before the start of the Federation Cup.

Abahani were also making all out efforts to build a balanced side in their bid regain their fame in the domestic soccer. This time they mainly targeted Mohammedans' players and ensured the services of an ever green Masud Rana and Hasan from the defence and midfielder Joy. They virtually bemused the black and whites with a late goal by clinching goalkeeper Nizam who shaved his head after joining the Abahani camp.

Abahani also brought in an old-pal attacking midfielder Rakib from Muktijoddha, promising striker Uzzal and second choice goalkeeper Munna from Badda Jagarani.

Former national stars Ashrafuddin Ahmed Chunnu, Monem Munna and Sattyajit Das Rupu who are working round the clock to fortify the Abahani team, also picked up midfielder Abdullah Pervez from Dhanmondi and Saikat from Arambagh.

Mohammedan Sporting Club at the moment looked to be the most affected team in the transfer gamble. As many as eight players (Nizam, Masud Rana, Hasan, Titu, Joy, Monwar, Kanchan and Tushar) from their regular team have already deserted the side. Probably MSC officials were unaware of the development in the transfer-market as they hardly took any interest to retain the heavyweights. Now they are making desperate attempts to take second-string players from different clubs. The club officials are trying to console their supporters by telling them to fill up the gap by recruiting well-merited foreign players. This season each team will be able to field four foreign players in a single match and even the clubs will be allowed to register as many fresh players for any match.

The club managed to retain the services of two old-horse Jewel Rana and Imtiaz Ahmed Nakib and Forhad, Sentu, Anwar, Pappu and Bijan. Besides these, they are taking a number of players from different clubs.

Newly emerged National League champions Muktijoddha Sangsad also looked to be a affected side after the sudden departure of Alfaz, Rajani, Sujan, Arman and Biplab.

The club officials are facing a tough time to get good replacements for them. However, they have the consolation for getting the service of country's leading striker Kanchan who left Mohammedans to settle an old case filed against him by Muktijoddha as stated by Kanchan to journalists on the eve of his departure for the Reds. He also said that he has signed for the Muktis for one season and hinted that this time he would get over Taka twelve lakh from Muktijoddha. Kanchan said he has still a good relationship with Mohammedans and if the club want him, he is ready to go back next season.

Motorsport at Ashulia in Oct

BSS, DHAKA, The Independent

Go-karting, one of world's most popular motorsports, is no more a dream for racing lovers in Bangladesh as the fun game is going to be launched at Ashulia in Savar next month.

The motorsport, first of its kind in the country, was earlier set to be kicked off by August, but it is delayed due to adverse weather conditions, especially heavy rain this year, organisers said.

Some young university graduates have taken the initiative to launch the high-speed racing game on a piece of land beside the Tongi-Ashulia road, 30 km off Dhaka city and a short distance from the Fantasy Kingdom, country's first theme park.

Go-Kart, a four-wheel small vehicle, is about two metres long and 1.2 metres wide with base height from ground about four inches. It teaches motor driving, better car control and provides first step into the motorsport.

"Almost 80 percent preparations for the motorsport have been completed. Karts and other necessary equipment have also been imported from the UK," Mahmud Hasan Khan, Managing Director of Speedway Karting Limited, told BSS on Friday.

Mahmud Khan said the Speedway Karting track built on few acres of land would give enthusiasts the feelings of a European competition circuit at home.

Americans introduced go-karting in the early 50s, but it has become a hotcake for the people who have a passion for highspeed motor driving across the world.

The go-karts having 50 cc to 800 cc engines and with a speed of up to 100 kph run on a selected zigzag track. The track is split into some laps ranging between 300 metres and one kilometre.

Usually people aged 13-40 prefer go-karting, but anybody can enjoy the fun game if he or she doesn't have any heart problem. Meek-hearted people are discouraged to go for go- karting because of maximum speed and low-base height of karts, said Rezaus Samad Naser, director of Speedway Karting.

The sport is very popular in the Western world and countries in Asia, including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India. Go-karting was introduced six years back in India, but it has now become a craze for many Indians.

World's three top cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Brain Lara and Steve Waugh put their best in July to promote go-karting in India.

India has currently 20 karting tracks.
