Sports News Monday, September 22, 2003 Compiled by SDNP Head lines AFP, KARACHI, The Independent Sept 21: Yasir Hameed hit another majestic knock of 82 and aggressive half centuries by Inzamamul Haq (59 not out) and Yousuf Youhana (52) helped Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 58 runs in the fifth and final day-night limited overs international at National stadium here on Sunday. Hameed set the platform on which Inzamam and Youhana, who completed 5,000 runs in his 144th one-day match to become seventh Pakistani batsman to cross the milestone, built to help the home team post a challenging 302-5 in their 50 overs. "It is wonderful to win both the Tests and one-dayers although we tried some youngsters in the series and its nice to have found some talented players coming to the fore," said Inzamam, who took over after Rashid Latif was banned for the one-day series. Bangladesh looked more inclined to complete the quota of 50 overs but still managed their best total of 244-7 in their 50 overs, ending their month-long tour with some signs of improvement but without a win. Bangladesh captain Khaled Mahmud Sujan said he was disappointed with the outcome of the series but happy for his team's improved showing on the tour. "Definitely the outcome of the tour is disappointing but we set some goals in the series and are happy that we achieved some of them," Sujan said. With the 5-0 whitewash of Bangladesh, Pakistan shot to fourth place in the ICC one-day rankings devised last year, behind world champions Australia, South Africa and England. Alok Kapali (69) and Rajin Saleh (71) set a new third wicket record for Bangladesh in all one-day internationals with 128 runs but the asking rate kept creeping as Bangladesh lost five wickets in the last four overs. The previous third wicket stand of 108 was recorded by Faruk Ahmed and Athar Ali Khan against India at Chandigarh in 1990-91. Rajin put 50 for the second wicket with Hannan Sarkar after the tourists lost opener Habibul Bashar Sumon for 13. Hannan made 50 with four boundaries before Younis Khan caught him off Shoaib Malik. Nonetheless the Pakistanis put up a rather poor performance and were thwarted time and again by in-form Bangladesh goalkeeper Md Russel Khan Bappi. The much-vaunted penalty corner battery of the Pakistanis also failed to strike as efficiently as it normally does and was only able to convert two of the five penalty corners the side was awarded. Mudassar Ali opened scoring in the eighth minute and the Pakistanis failed to immediately convert their domination into goals. Khasif Jawad later notched up a hat-trick, scoring in the 21st, 46th and 61st minutes, while penalty corner ace marksman Sohail Abbas got a brace by converting penalty corners in the 26th and 62nd. Skipper Nadeem Ahmad came onto the score sheet in the 46th minute while Rehan Butt rounded up a miserable opening match for the Bangladeshis with the eighth and final goal in the 64th minute. "We played well in patches but I am not too worried about it as it was our first match," said Pakistan team manager Abdul Rashid Junior. "There will be a tough match against China tomorrow and the players know what the stakes are." Meanwhile, India started their campaign with a comfortable 5-1 win over China. In another match, Japan overcame stiff resistance from Hong Kong to register a 7-2 win. But it was more of a warm-up for the Japanese who were conserving energy for their vital match against Malaysia Monday. "We tried out a couple of things in the first half and they did not work well. But we did not want to give too much away as the Malaysians were observing our match closely," said Japan coach Toichi Nagai. Japan took the lead through Akihiko Hirate in the 12th minute but allowed Hong Kong to get back into the game with Preetpal Singh Chima scoring via a reverse hit in the 20th minute. It was a totally different Japan in the second half as they ran rings around the fast-tiring Hong Kong players. And their efforts were rewarded when skipper Kenichi Katayama scored in the 40th minute to put them 2-1 ahead. Naohiko Tobita made it 3-1 when he converted a penalty corner in the 50th but Hong Kong stayed in the hunt when Ali Akhbar scored in the 51st minute. Japan scored four goals in 11 minutes through Katayama (56), Ryuji Furusato (61, 68) and Kazayuki Ozwaw (64) to take control of the match. Hong Kong scored a consolation goal through Arif Ali who converted a penalty stroke in the 69th minute. A calm second day SPORTS REPORTER, The Independent After the opening day's heat, the football transfers scene cooled down on the second day. The big four of Dhaka football - Mohammedans, Abahani, Muktijoddha and Brothers -- fortified their camps on the opening day, leaving no interest left in the four-day transfer trail. There were a handful of footballers seeking new clubs on Sunday as the Metropolis Football League Committee (MFLC) committee officials got some breathing space after handling an over-crowded first day. Among noted players, national defender Papel Mahmud made sure he will stay with national league champions Muktijoddha Sangsad. Abahani and Mohammedans were also involved in Sunday's transfer market by signing young players. Abahani recruited Abu Nasser of East End Club while Mohammedans bought a third goalkeeper, Sheikh Masud Parvez from Prantik Krira Chakra. In a late move on Saturday, the struggling Mohammedans brought back their old left fullback Ruhul Amin who virtually quit football. Ruhul who was not active in the last season, was officially a part of now second-division outfit Chalantika. Like the black and whites, neighbours Arambagh Krira Sangha - last year's fourth - suffered blows as well by losing their midfield strength Saiful and Biddyut to Muktijoddha. Former national striker Don joined first division Rahmatganj, Biplab and Kamal went to Sheikh Russell KC, Shahin and goaltender Himu to Wanderers. But their collection is worth remaining in the top half of the ten-team fray. They retained Juku, goalkeeper Peeru, Kamruzzaman, Kamrul, Imrul, Tabith as well as foreign booters Oinu and Mostafa Kaba. In addition, they have signed well-known figures Apu Barua, Shamsher, Johnny (Badda), Tarek, Arman Azizi (Victoria), Asad (Abahani), Walid (Farashganj), Kamal (Wanderers), Ashraful Karim (Brothers). One of the most suffered sides of the Premier League, Dhanmondi Club, roped in Ratan from Victoria and fellow striker Sohag on Sunday. Dhanmondi, who played superb football for the past two seasons and appeared as the new giant-killers, lost their core to big clubs. Promising midfielder Abdullah Parvez joined neighbours Abahani Limited while his partner Nurul Islam, defender Narayan Pal and goalkeeper Azam Biplab signed for newcomers Sheikh Russell KC. The striking pair Mehdi Hassan Topu and Ashraful Kader Manju left for Brothers and Mohammedans respectively. They tried their best to cover the gap by recruiting former Bangladesh U-16 captain Al Amin (Victoria), Pradip Barua (Abahani), Wasim (Badda), Azizi Al Arman, Tutul (Arambagh), Bipul (Brothers), Aminul (Wanderers) and Sohel Rana (Wari). However, their last season's fifth-place finish might come under threat as Russell KC look set to throw a challenge. The first division champions apparently have built the strongest team after the big four and promise much. They collected a number of good players and at the fear of losing them, signed them on commission on Saturday. They are goalkeepers Apel (Abahani) and Azam Biplab (Dhanmondi), Abahani leftback Mintu and forwards Bulbul and Jalal Jr, Muktijoddha medio Asif, Rahmatganj's prolific striker Milon who was in top form in the recently concluded national league for Moulvibazar Wanderers, Arambagh defenders Biplab and Kamal, Dhanmondi centre-back Narayan and midfielder Nurul Islam. Old names Rahmatganj and Farashganj departed last season and with three teams to be relegated this year, Badda Jagarani, Victoria Sporting Club and Dhaka Wanderers - who returned to the top flight after a long time - will face the hardest task to retain their premiership. In two days, a total of 286 tokens were taken and 159 switched teams on the opening day. The MFLC earned Tk 2 lakh from the first day's business inclusive of Tk 85,000 for 16 signings on commission. CRICINFO, KARACHI, The Independent Sept 21: Pakistan made their second-highest score of the series in the last one-day international at Karachi, racking up 302 for 5 as Bangladesh's bowling, after three games of steady improvement, took some heavy punishment from the three batsmen who have dominated this series: Yasir Hameed, Yousuf Youhana and Inzamam-ul-Haq. Pakistan's aggregate at the 15-over mark was their lowest of the series, but when Mohammad Hafeez was out in the 23rd over with the score on 95, Youhana came out to join Hameed. With scores of 49, 106, 65 and 94 not out behind him, and the series comfortably in the bag, Youhana felt no need to take some time to play himself in. His blistering 52 took just 32 balls, with six fours and three sixes. He put on 74 for the second wicket with Hameed in 11 overs, at a time of the innings that is usually marked out for steady accumulation. Hameed, back to the opener's slot after Imran Nazir was picked in his place for the previous game, made 82. After they were out in successive overs, Inzamam took charge, and Shoaib Malik and Abdul Razzaq chipped in with valuable contributions. Inzamam hit out with murderous power at the end, but the shot of the innings came from the prodigiously talented Malik, walking across his stumps, getting down on one knee, and swinging Tapash Baisya high over midwicket for six. After their near-miss at Rawalpindi three days ago, when they extended Pakistan's run-chase to the penultimate ball of the innings, Bangladesh appeared deflated. At the innings break, Pakistan were well-placed to make it five wins in a row. BDR eliminated Bangladesh Ansar 35-21 in the first semifinal on Sunday at the Outer Stadium's handball ground. The winners led the first half 21-12. Mirza with 12 goals was the top scorer for BDR. Police defeated Dhaka DSA 39-24 in the second semifinal. The first half scores were 23-15 in favour of Police. Mithu netted 13 goals for Police. The two defeated semifinalists will meet in a play-off for third place today at 8 am. State Minister for Youth and Sports Fazlur Rahman will distribute prizes as chief guest. Two Bangladesh leggies to go for higher training SPORTS REPORTER, The Independent Two Bangladeshi legspinners will go to India for higher training to be held from September 30 to October 12. Mahbubul Anam, advisor of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), informed that the training programme will be conducted by the former Australian cricketer Petter Filtop under auspices of Cricket Club of India (CCI). Mahbub told that former ICC president Raj Singh Dungarpur proposed the BCB in the last ACC meeting to send two legspinners. The organisers will provide all the expenses of the two cricketers. Bangladesh are yet to select the bowlers for the two-week training programme. |
