Sujan happy with performance: Rajin find of Pak tour

Whatmore disappointed at not winning any ODI

AFP, KARACHI, The Independent

Sept 22: Bangladesh cricket captain Khaled Mahmud Sujan Monday hailed his team's performance despite an absence of wins in its five-week Test and one-day series in Pakistan, saying the team's confidence has improved.

"Definitely the outcome of the Test and one-day series is not encouraging but with the overall improvement shown on the tour I am convinced cricket will go up in Bangladesh," Sujan said, a day after the series was wrapped with a day-night match in southern port city Karachi.

Bangladesh was blanked 3-0 in Tests and 5-0 in the one-dayers, but the Test minnows put up a tough fight against a revamped Pakistan side and came within one wicket of registering their first ever win in the third Test at Multan.

The tourists also gave the home side a scare in the fourth one-day match at Rawalpindi.

"We tried our level best on the tour and came close to a win at Multan, but I am satisfied that the goals set before the tour were nearly achieved," he said.

Bangladesh, berated for their under-par performance since gaining Test status in 2000, have lost 23 of their 24 Tests and have not won a limited overs international for 44 matches.

Critics have called for their Test status to be withdrawn.

Their two-match series against world champions Australia was billed the "biggest mis-match" of cricket history and the team was publicly denigrated by former Australian batsman David Hookes.

"Calls for Test status to be taken back were unjustified," said Sujan, who took over as captain after Bangladesh's winless World Cup in April.

"If you look back at our tour of Australia the improvement graph has gone up and I hope that players cash in on the experiences earned in Australia and Pakistan in our home series against England." England will play two Tests and three one-day games in Bangladesh next month.

Sujan singled out batsman Razin Saleh as the find of the Pakistan tour. Bangladesh's Australian coach Dave Whatmore however expressed disappointment.

"I am satisfied the way team played in the Test series but disappointed at not winning a one-day game," he said.

Whatmore, who coached Sri Lanka to World Cup triumph in 1996, has seen Bangladesh lose five Tests and six one-day games since he began coaching them."The objective is to keep on improving and after this tour I know who can play in the longer run and I will sit down and work on that," he said.

There was praise from Pakistan's coach Javed Miandad, who said the visitors performed beyond expectations.

"Bangladesh was not the team we were expecting, they did not allow us to win easily," said Miandad.

"The way they have played here I think they will create a lot of problems for England."

Transfers end today

SPORTS REPORTER, The Independent

The 2003-04 season's footballers' transfers end today, but not with the enthusiasm it had began three days earlier.

The third day saw mostly young players flock the transfers scene seeking fortune at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Monday but the number gradually reduced after opening day's mega show by four local giants.

In all 343 tokens were taken in three days including 57 on Monday.

With the Premier League clubs taking the centrestage on the first two days, the first division sides were sidelined but teams like Rahmatganj and Farashganj, both relegated from the top flight of Dhaka soccer last season, looked serious about regaining the premiership.

Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society, famous for signing big names of the past, maintained their tradition and built a strong side that look like a contender for one of the three berths for promotion.

Their major signing was former national striker Mizanur Rahman Don who played for Arambagh last season after serving with big guns like Brothers, Mohammedans and Abahani in the past.

Their list of departure, however, was too heavy as booters like Milon (Sheikh Russell KC), Kamruzzaman Selim (Wanderers), Shahajuddin Tipu, Deen Mohammed, Kabir (Muktijoddha) Faisal (Mohammedans) opted to stay in the Premier League. But a few showed loyalty to the old-Dhaka outfit, like midfielders Shoeb, Taju, Zahid.

Also to join were defenders Shamim (Badda), Rezaul (Brothers), Sohel Rana (Agrani) and Parimal from Dhanmondi apart from a number of youngsters.

Youngmen's Club Fakirerpool also signed a score of players and are expected to give Rahmatganj and Farashganj a run for their money.

Meanwhile, having fortified their camps early, the Dhaka heavyweights are concentrating on preparation.

Defending champions Mohammedans, who were the most sufferers in the transfers by losing eight quality players, managed to rope in second rated footballers who were at hand. Now they intend to prepare well for the first competition, the Federation Cup, which is due later next month.

Mohammedans, under coach Abul Hossain who delivered the club three titles last season, will train at the BKSP in Savar for one month. The black and whites are likely to leave Dhaka tomorrow night.

Abahani meanwhile, will start training from Friday like National League holders Muktijoddha Sangsad.

Long time server Amlesh Sen and Russian coach Anatoly are in charge of the sky-blues while Muktis have Shafiqul Islam Manik.

Brothers Union, who stole the show by signing ten national players and a few promising names, have yet to decide when the go into action. They are also expected to utilise facilities at BKSP after their players return from a pleasure trip to India.

Brothers have Abu Noman Nannu in charge but they are looking for a foreign coach from Yugoslavia.

Former national midfielder and ex-Mohammedans captain Mahbubul Haq Roxy looks set to bid goodbye to his playing career by making coaching debut for Badda Jagarani. If needed, Roxy might still play for the club.

Newcomers Russell Krira Chakra roped in famous coach Wazed Gazi for the season while former Wanderers forward Kazi Sattar returns to his old club as coach.

Victoria lost Abu Yusuf to the national Under-19 team and replaces the reputed coach with BKSP's Syed Golam Jilani, a former club player.

Meer Faruk returns as Arambagh coach while Anwar Babu retained his job at Dhanmondi.

Pakistan thank Bangladesh for return of int'l cricket

AFP, KARACHI, The Independent

Sept 22: Pakistan coach Javed Miandad and captain Inzamam-ul Haq have thanked Bangladesh for leading the return of foreign cricket to Pakistan, saying the tourists proved cricketers are safe here.

"We thank Bangladesh for playing in Pakistan and by playing a one-day in Karachi they proved to the world that cricket is safe here," Miandad told reporters on Monday.

Despite whitewashing them 3-0 in Tests and 5-0 in the one-day series, Pakistan owes Bangladesh a debt of gratitude as their tour marked the return of international cricket to Pakistan after a 15-month drought due to security fears.

New Zealand had to cut short a tour of Pakistan when a suicide bomb blast outside their team hotel in May last year killed 14 people including 11 French naval staff.

Despite the untroubled tour by Bangladesh, a minor blast in the southern port city of Karachi on Friday prompted South Africa to cancel its tour to Pakistan.

Pakistan still hopes South Africa agree to a revised itinerary, eliminating all matches scheduled for Karachi and possibly Peshawar, the two venues where South Africans expressed a reluctance to play.

Bangladesh manager Latif Khan said his team's tour was trouble-free.

"We played a Test match in Karachi last month, a one-day match yesterday and the security at present is excellent."

"None of our players had any security problem, whatsoever."

West Indies and Australia refused to tour Pakistan over security fears, forcing Pakistan to play two of its home series on neutral venues in

Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.
